Oceanographer is a device which continuously measures changes in water level over time in the determined location and point. Reading the record of water level is obtained by float-counterweight system. The Oceanographer was set in Bakar on 1929 and since then it has been recording sea level at the same point, till today. The sea water measurements were performed also in some other Adriatic cities but only the Oceanographic Institute in Bakar remained active till today, and this makes it the oldest on the Adriatic and one of the oldest in the Mediterranean. Based on registration of Bakar water level, numerous scientific studies were conducted at home and abroad, and the results are used for other immediate practical purposes.
