The Old Fire of Japnenica Lime Kilns

Plase Interpretive Trail

Do you know what japnenice are? And do you know what lime is? Well, the path from lime (cro. vapno) via lime kilns (cro. vapnenice) leads to japnenice – the local name for the old kilns once used to produce homemade lime. And by “this area,” we mean Plase, where in the early 20th century at least 22 japnenica lime kilns were in operation!

In honour of Plase’s rich lime-burning tradition – symbolised today by eight preserved japnenica lime kilns – the thematic interpretive trail The Old Fire of Japnenica Lime Kilns has been created. During a pleasant walk through the woodland, you’ll learn how lime-burning arrived in this region and what it meant for its people. The trail is marked with some ten interpretive panels. As for the surviving lime kilns: some can be approached safely, while others are best avoided due to difficult terrain.

In any case, we recommend sturdy, high-ankle footwear and the usual precautions when walking in nature. At the start of the trail, you can scan a QR code to download a leaflet containing playful activities for the youngest visitors.
